The Challenge
Breaking Free from Manual Bottlenecks in High-Mix Manufacturing
In high-mix, low-volume (HMLV) manufacturing environments, traditional production systems struggle with inefficiency, manual scheduling, and a lack of real-time responsiveness. In HMLV factories, manual scheduling consumes hours each week, while unexpected downtime erodes margins by up to 20%. mode40 recognized traditional systems simply cannot keep pace. The sector needed a smarter, adaptive solution to address persistent bottlenecks and unlock new levels of productivity.
The Journey
From Static Systems to Intelligent Agents: Building the Future of MES
mode40, led by CEO, Cameron Bergen set out to build XEX, an AI-powered Manufacturing Execution System (MES). His vision was to create a coordinated network of intelligent agents that could handle everything from scheduling to anomaly detection by continuously learning from live data.
mode40 partnered with the AI Hub to help bring this vision to life and accelerate their ambitious R&D roadmap and go to market faster.
Through the AI Hub’s support in applying the most advanced methods for data structuring, model training, machine learning operations and scalable system architecture, mode40 accelerated its vision of a fully autonomous, adaptive MES. The collaboration reduced mode40’s time to implementation, validated its product for commercial use and helped create data pipelines to unlock value in customer data.
The Impact
Proven Efficiency, Scalable Systems, and Market Traction
- Real-time Optimization: AI agents now autonomously manage scheduling, machine performance, and quality control, resulting in significant efficiency gains.
- Downtime Reduced: Initial deployments have shown up to 12% improvement in Overall Equipment Effectiveness and throughput.
- Scalability: The system integrates seamlessly with ERP and IoT platforms, making it viable across diverse manufacturing operations.
- Market Readiness: mode40 is now engaging with 10+ manufacturers, with plans to expand to 50+ within 3 years.
What’s Next?
mode40 is developing new predictive and quality agents while scaling the deployment of XEX across Canada and globally. They aim to become the go-to platform for smart manufacturing, replacing rule-based systems with adaptive, AI-driven operations.
Collaborating with AI Hub at Durham College has been an incredible experience. Their deep expertise in artificial intelligence, from applied machine learning to real-time data modeling, brought meaningful impact to our development process. The team’s ability to quickly understand the complex manufacturing challenges and translate them into practical AI solutions has helped move our MES platform forward in a significant way. We truly value the innovation and technical depth they bring to the table.
