The Challenge
Bridging the gap between Estheticians and Dermatologists
Traditionally, skin assessments for conditions like hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, and moisture loss have relied on manual, experience-based observation. These subjective methods, while valuable, often vary between practitioners, limiting consistency, accuracy, and scalability. For Adoreyes, a youth-led beauty innovation company under Blendose Inc., this presented a challenge: How do we deliver dermatology-grade insight to estheticians, by embedding AI into a more scalable and user-friendly skin analysis tool?
The Journey
From Concept to Collaboration: Building an AI Skin Analysis System
Adoreyes partnered with the AI Hub to develop a deep learning-based skin analysis platform that could identify and interpret various skin conditions using computer vision and AI models. The system aims to provide real-time insights, enabling estheticians to make informed recommendations backed by data.
The R&D process was highly collaborative. Drawing on early research insights and external clinical input, Adoreyes identified key dermatological priorities and assembled a proprietary dataset to train and validate its AI models. Working with Durham College’s AI Hub, the team compared several state-of-the-art computer-vision approaches and evaluated both commercial and bespoke deployment options before selecting the solution best suited to professional skincare environments.
AI was central to making this innovation possible. From enhancing the speed and accuracy of analysis to reducing cost barriers, the technology empowered Adoreyes to reimagine skincare as an act of foresight, not just response.
The AI Hub provided:
- A clear implementation roadmap for AI integration
- Guidance on selecting suitable hardware/software infrastructure
- Support in evaluating models
- Ethically sound feedback loops and privacy-focused data strategies
The Impact: Precision, Accessibility, and AI-Driven Confidence
- Improved Client Outcomes: Estheticians now detect early signs of skin concerns and personalize treatment plans with greater accuracy.
- Professional Empowerment: AI levels the playing field, giving small spas and beauty professionals access to tools previously limited to dermatologists.
- Scalable Adoption: The system has been piloted in medical spas and clinics, with promising feedback on ease of use and practical outcomes.
- Strategic Positioning: Adoreyes is now eligible for NSERC ARD grants, having advanced from AI adopter to innovator.
What’s Next?
Adoreyes continues to partner with the AI Hub to develop and enhance their product. Currently they are actively developing its Minimum Viable Product (MVP), an AI-powered diagnostic tool that evolves based on user feedback and stays compliant with ethical AI and privacy regulations. The long-term goal? A real-time, portable skin analysis device designed for med spas and wellness clinics. It empowers estheticians with intelligent insights to elevate skincare and support early recognition of potentially serious concerns such as suspicious lesions, helping guide clients toward timely medical attention when it matters most.
